Generating Wind with Kites?

Makani Power has developed an "airborne wind turbine" capable of generating high output in lower wind settings with less capital outlay. According to a TechCrunch article "the wings take on a circular flight path, perpendicular to the wind’s direction."Makani has received funding from the Department of Energy to the tune of $3 million, and Google has funded them with $20 million.
