The Parable of the Bloody White Dress and the First Godsmacking Miracle

An unexpected, irrefutable, and the most awe inspiring miracle I have ever been an upfront eyewitness to has forever muted my criticism of Charismatics and Pentecostals.

My brother Ted, Julia, and Mary when they came to visit us in Michigan.

“My dog is not in that fight!” was one of my dad’s favorite sayings. That was the standard answer that he would give whenever anyone would bring up denominational differences.

Mom, however, had a different approach altogether. She let all the Dittmer boys know up front that the last women she wanted us dragging home for her approval was “Pentecostal girls!”

My brother, Ted, married a Pentecostal girl. She is a lovely and gracious lady who has warmly adopted our family and the Church of the Nazarene as her own. I was at a large family gathering sitting across from her and Ted, when I asked them both if they ever remember Mom mentioning anything about the type of girls Mom wanted us to date. Mom promptly kicked me in the shins under the table, so she must have backed down a little from her former fervor.

One of my favorite pictures of Mom, after Dad passed away.

I became acquainted with the Royer family right after I graduated from high school. The Royer Quartet was looking for a pianist. Mike Royer stopped after working a typical day as a welder in the steel mills of Gary. He was covered in black soot from head to toe, but I noticed his irrepressible smile and enthusiasm, and after meeting the family, I became an adopted member of the Royer family and the pianist for the Royer quartet.

This friendship caused my poor mother a lot of stress. It also made me evaluate everything that I saw or heard very carefully, for even at that young age, I was measuring everything against the Word of God.That brings me to the incident which keeps me, a Wesleyan, from criticizing the Pentecostals and Charismatics.

Dave and Jane Smith are on the inside. Lynne and I are on the outside. The picture was taken at Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

My late wife Lynne and I had formed a singing group called the Insights in Colorado. Our first partners were Dave and Jane Smith. Dave and I were Bible College students at Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs. After Dave left to pastor a church in California, Lynne and I sang with the Dittmer family, then we reformed the Insights with the help of Dave Royer in the winter of 1972.

Dave Royer is on the right. Again, this is taken in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Insights sang at a gracious Church of the Nazarene in LaJunta, Colorado, pastored by the outgoing and cheerful Corby Grimes. The church had a strong youth group, with young people from several denominations attending.

When the Assemblies of God Church decided to have a revival, we were asked to bring the music program on two separate week ends. The revival was unique in two ways. First, it was led by a lady evangelist by the name of Betty Swinford, a writer of Christian children’s books for Moody Publishing. She was soft spoken, and logical. Second, it was open ended. There was no closing date. The revival would continue as long as the meetings were being blessed with success.

Betty Swinford was the author of numerous children's books, including this one I found with Google.

The first weekend services were well attended by teenagers, including quite a few from the Nazarene church, for they had come to hear the Insights sing. Betty would have seekers come up and stand in a circle and close their eyes as she prayed for them. As she would point to them while praying, the person being prayed for would fall back as if hit by a wind, then they would regain their balance and stand upright. I wondered at that, for many of the seekers were not pentecostals, and had their eyes tightly closed. How did they know Betty was pointing at them?

The next weekend, the kids had gone out into the community and dug up the neediest kids in town. I had a front row seat to all the action, for my job, after we sang, was to provide music background for the service. Lynne took her post back by our recordings, to greet people as they left.

I noticed a cluster of teenage girls talking to a rough looking young woman on my right. They were fervent and tearful, full of love for this very lost sheep of the flock. She was a drug addict, a user of heroine, and the mother of a child. She was in danger of losing custody to her child, but she wasn’t ready to give up her drugs. She walked out of the service.

Dave and I always matched in our dress when we sang. Our favorite suit at that time was a bright cranberry colored polyester suit jacket, with red and white herring bone bell bottom pants.

Lynne would make her own dresses, and her most stunning was a solid white floor length dress. She always looked radiant, and her waist length hair was done up in a high bun. She was wearing the white dress that night.

I had been softly playing at the piano when I noticed a tumult at the doorway, then I saw Lynne. Her beautiful white dress was covered with bright red blood, and the troubled young woman who had left was leaning on her as Lynne was half leading half dragging the troubled girl to the front where the office and the phone were located. Betty, the evangelist was at my right at the altar. As Lynne passed them she leaned down and whispered in the evangelist’s ear. The evangelist beckoned Lynne to kneel down, and she kneeled at the altar with the broken bleeding girl.

Lynne later told me that she had been at the back when the young woman had burst into the back door, and had collapsed in her arms. The troubled woman had gone out into the church yard in despair, and had slit her wrists LENGTHWISE! (I was told later by an EMT that if you are really serious about suicide, you slit your wrists lengthwise to cut the arteries several times with one slice!)

Lynne logically was dragging/leading the girl to the office where the phone was located, when the evangelist had asked if they could pray for her first. Lynne’s response was, yes, but very quickly, please. As they knelt down, the blood was spurting from the girl’s wrists in rhythm to her heart. As the evangelist prayed, the bleeding geyser suddenly stopped.

You may doubt what I will tell you next, but for those who knew Lynne, you will say, Yep, that was Lynne! When Lynne saw the bleeding stop, she did the most unwise thing any emergency response aide has ever done. She placed her hands on both sides of one of the woman’s wrist, and using her thumbs as pry bars, tried to peel the woman’s formerly slitted wrist skin apart! It was very unwise, yet with all of that effort, she could not find any slit!

You may draw your own conclusion as to what happened. The pastor of the Church of the Nazarene did. Since so many Nazarene teens had been to the revival, he was asked by his church board to renounce the revival as a work of the devil. He could not, and he had to take another church. Lynne is no longer alive to back me in this unbelievable account. Dave Royer, however, is. His profile is on Facebook.

My perspective was forever changed. I no longer viewed the world as a rationalist, but as a true believer in the power of the Almighty God. Others may enjoy getting into a doctrinal or denominational fracas. But when they ask me for my opinion, I quote my father.

My dog is not in that fight!

My favorite picture of Dad.

Update: My mom and dad Bill and Carol Dittmer are in heaven, along with my late wife Lynne and precious Pat Royer, along with the patriarch and the matriarch of the Royers Mr and Mrs Royer.

Three Prayers and a Heavenly Chuckle

I asked the Lord for Wisdom to not take a life, during the days when I learned of birth control. No word from Heaven, but He honored that prayer in many ways, including on the highway, with many close calls.
Late in life I asked the Lord for Wisdom to not hurt those I love or respect the most. No word from Heaven, but relationships almost immediately turned around.
I asked the Lord for Wisdom to not make mistakes that deeply embarrass me. The response from Heaven was a chuckle. I took that as a no.
I had previously asked the Lord to blindfold me, for the pride of my wisdom kept me from deep, life changing, miraculous grace, so that there would be healings and restorations. I would advise others with Wisdom, but Wisdom was ignored, so I turned to Grace, but Grace comes to the Humble, not my strong point.
I will embrace a thousand humiliations, as long as God rains down grace.
I have seen spectacular answers to simple prayers that reveal His Grace.
Wisdom, especially specific wisdom, is a delight, but Grace trumps Wisdom.

The Setup

I woke up at 8:30 after finally falling asleep at 3 am. I used the time to setup the bedroom for when Mary woke up. Got out fresh pjs, dry hospice super depends, a clean sheet, and a hospice chuck. It soaks up urine, then you chuck it.

Had everything set up by 9:30, so I laid back down for a successful power nap. Woke up at 10:30 and coaxed Mary out of bed by offering her a cold drink of diet pop. Changing clothes and bedding went smoothly. I kept my head low, avoided being bossy, and thanked her profusely for her patience.

A very good friend was concerned that Mary would be mortified if she discovered what I was posting. Of course she would. But these posts are not for her, but for other caretakers whom I'm trying to encourage. The limits of Mary's curiosity are just what's in the room. Thank you for understanding.

Scriptures That Stick in my Brain

Verses that stick in my brain:

Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be full.

This gospel shall be preached as a witness unto all nations. Then shall the end come.

You shall hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled for the end is not yet.

In this world you shall have tribulation. But be of good cheer, for I, Jesus, have overcome the world.

Men vs Women

Another busy morning. Mary was soaked, so I pulled off a layer of bedding, then worked with Mary to change her wet clothes. To keep the lioness from lashing out, I thank her profusely for being patient with me and keep my head down to avoid the appearance of being bossy.

There is a built in conflict between men and women, an intentional design by the Creator so that we have to depend on Him for strength. It's part of the curse. Look it up in Genesis.

Even Jesus got a little frosty with His mother when she gently nudged her Son into helping out at the wedding. "My time is not yet." This was not part of plan A. She wisely did not get bossy, but turned to the servants and gave this epic advice: Whatever He tells you to do, do it!

The servants trusted Mary enough to obey her advice and voila! A miracle happened! What an awesome woman! And what an awesome Savior!

Lesson? God's plan B is better than Satan's plan A. His strength is perfected in our weakness. #maddog #AwesomeGod

Advice from Jesus and Solomon

Jesus said "Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves."

Taking on bullies takes training and preparation. My dad was an expert on explosives, but always took us to the 4th of July city displays, handled by professionals. Let the professional bully fighters, cops and soldiers, protect you.

Get training. Martial arts is always a good idea.

Have an exit strategy. Doves appear harmless, but can explode into flight.

Serpents keep their head down and stay in the background.

Being prepared may include being armed. Jesus made sure one of the disciples had a sword on the night He was accosted.

Be prepared to go the extra mile with your enemy.  Citizens were conscripted to carry the gear of Roman soldiers one mile. Jesus said take it two miles. Jesus healed the ear that Peter cut off. Good thing the bad guy ducked. Jesus also advised turn the other cheek when your enemy slaps you. That's a hard one, especially if you've been trained to defend yourself.

A friend of mine was a youth leader and martial arts expert who was attacked in such a way he had no opportunity to defend himself. 5 men burst into his motel room, beat him badly, put a gun to his head, then said, "Is there anything you'd like to say before you die?"

"You may blow my brains all over this wall, but I'll still love you and Jesus loves you."

He was spared. God intervened.

Solomon also advised against interceding between two fighting neighbors, something about grabbing a tiger by the ears.

My fearless daughter is a supervisor at a halfway house for troubled teenage boys. She threw herself between two young men and was knocked unconscious by one of them.

I had two neighbors who were at war with each other. I saw them fighting. One neighbor had what looked like a black lead  pipe and was beating the other neighbor with it. I called the police, then rushed across the street to intercede.

That night someone set my car on fire. It was parked below our bedroom window. The fireman who investigated said if the fire had been a little hotter the gas tank could have exploded, destroying the house and possibly us. I was shaken.

All week I was sleepless, waiting for another attack. Then the words of Jesus came to me. Turn the other cheek. The next day I went to the angriest neighbor and told him, since I no longer had a car, he could use my driveway if he needed it. The family had three cars that they were always jockeying around. That night I slept like a baby.

The angry neighbor became less angry. He quit mowing his lawn during church services when the church windows were open. That Christmas he sent both the senior pastor and myself a Christmas card. They both had $10 in it.

Later he became gravely ill. The pastor who followed us was privileged to lead him to Jesus.

It appears Jesus knows what He is doing.

Nudging the Lioness

I manged to wake up when Mary went to the restroom. Sure enough, her pajama bottoms were wet, along with the bedding.
I worked with her by gentle nudging (she is fierce like a lioness) to change her underwear and bottoms, then slipped off the wet bedding and soaked super chuck from Hospice. Rachel is our awesome personal assistant who stops by almost daily. She had put down several layers of sheets and bedding protectors ahead of time. When the time comes, I just pull off the top layer and voila! Dry bedding! Rachel calls the disposable bedding protectors chucks. When you're done with them you just chuck 'em in the trash.

Mary's Eating Better

Am I nudging Mary into eating better? It works much better if I sit with her and share the meal. Otherwise she wanders off. Today she ate voraciously. Is this gentle training? This is a new experience for me. I lack words to describe what I am doing, always my short coming, even in music. I also feel God is gently nudging me in this process.
I will say it helps to have no fear. Thanks, Mom. And Dad, for training me to be a fearless driver. And Jesus Christ, for taking away my fear of Death and rejection. And the Holy Spirit, who whispers in my ear.
It also helps immensely to have faithful friends and fearless family, whom I know have my back and pitch in when I need help.
Death and disease are bullies. But the Heavenly Father and His Son the living and written Word have my back.

Have you been bragging about me again, God?

In the Book of Job, Job's friends secretly think that Job must have done something wrong to deserve all the calamities that fell on him so spectacularly and dramatically. They were unaware of the big picture.

Our calamities happen, I think, because our Creator brags on us. Mostly. There is also our stupidity. And arrogance.

In THE beginning, even before Genesis, God created a menagerie of Eternal, Invincible Beings. Angels.

We can guess that God gave them the basics. Who He was, is and will be. Infinite. All powerful. All knowing. Alpha and Omega. That means He knows the ending because... He's already there!

They were to be witnesses to what God was going to do. And they were going to assist Him in His greatest project... us!

God spoke, "Let there be light!" And light exploded into existence. Spectacular!! Yada, yada all the way to the Garden of Eden. Then He made us.

Wait a minute! Sir, do you realize how weak these creatures are? Here, I'll show you. And Lucifer went down to Eden, started a whispering campaign against God (Hath God said?) and just as he thought, Adam and Eve fell. Hard. And the calamities began!

So, why did God do this? To show a better way.

If you would be great in God's Kingdom, learn to be servant of all.

There is great beauty in weakness, such as a baby. Or a sunset.

When trials come, God says "My grace is sufficient for you."

I suspect God has been bragging about me. Satan appears to be after me.

My name is William Michael Dittmer Jr. My father had polio. William Michael Dittmer the 3rd died in infancy. William Michael Daly also died an infant.

My youngest daughter Wendelyn (my late wife wisely intervened when I wanted to name her Willimina Michelle) had a tragic car accident. She should have died. Her mother's prayers intervened.

My first helpmate and strong right arm died of cancer too young. My second wife has early onset severe Alzheimer's. I am caring for her, with an immense amount of help and Hospice, even though I am now disabled.

And yet I am smiling, partly because I suspect God is using me to help others.

God, are you bragging about me again? Thank you for using me to upset your opponent and reveal how powerful your grace is.

God's most powerful moment was when His Son Jesus was at His weakest, dying on the cross.
